Banks County High School News

Lieutenant Colonel William Hurd, U.S. Army and Commander of the U.S. Battalion within the Multinational Force and Observers in Egypt, spoke via Zoom in Teacher Will Carter’s classroom with Banks County High School American Literature students about international peacekeeping, leadership, civic duty, and public service, connecting his experiences to their unit on service and sacrifice in honor of Veterans Day.

At its November meeting, the Banks County Board of Education recognized students who earned top scores on i-Ready, Lennections, and Canvas assessments. Students were selected for this honor based on their outstanding performance on fall and midterm assessments.

Banks County Elementary and Middle Schools honored local veterans with student performances, accompanied by the Banks County Middle and High School bands. BCMS Teacher, SGT Toni Mullins, spoke about her journey in the Army.

Banks County was named among the Georgia Department of Education’s 2024–2025 Literacy Leader and Math Leader honorees, with Banks County High School earning Literacy Leader for High School Growth and Math Leader for High School Growth, and Banks County Middle School recognized as a Math Leader for Outstanding Achievement. These awards—based on Georgia Milestones reading (Lexile-based status) and math proficiency—reflect a system-wide effort, and our district vision that “Expectations Influence Success.”

THE MEETING WILL BE HELD AT THE BANKS COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR SYSTEM-WIDE TRAINING.

We are excited to share that the Georgia Mountains YMCA is offering Holiday Camps packed with fun and learning—holiday arts and crafts, STEAM activities, swimming lessons, and plenty of holiday cheer, all under close supervision.

Financial assistance and CAPS scholarships are available for families who qualify.

Banks County teachers recently visited the ClearTouch Experience Center in South Carolina as part of the district’s Smartboard professional development initiative focused on improving classroom engagement and achievement. The visit supported the district’s Strategic Plan to strengthen instructional strategies, technology integration, and collaboration among educators. Teachers participated in hands-on sessions exploring new tools and techniques to enhance interactive learning across classrooms.

Lana Cannon, Banks County High School’s Teacher of the Year, has been named the 2025–2026 Banks County School System Teacher of the Year.

Congratulations to Banks County students and staff on a standout 2024–2025 year, marked by rising literacy, strong Milestones and EOC results across grades, a 92.7% graduation rate, AP success, and BCMS’s Title I Reward School honor.
