Banks County School System names Jason Gibson as the new head girls basketball coach for the 2024-2025 season.
Jason Gibson will follow in Coach Steve Shedd's footsteps, who is set to lead the team at White County starting this fall.
Jason Gibson has an extensive background in both coaching and educational administration. With a career spanning over 28 years, he has coached multiple sports at the collegiate and high school levels. His leadership is expected to build on the legacy of success at Banks County and guide the Lady Leopards into another state appearance and the coveted state title.
Gibson served as Assistant Boys Basketball Coach at the University of North Georgia, Head Boys Basketball Coach at Emmanuel University, Head Varsity Girls Coach at Jefferson City High School, Athletic Director at Dawson County High School, and Athletic Director at Rabun County High School.
In addition to his coaching duties, Gibson has served as an Assistant Principal at Dawson County Schools and Athletic Director/ Director of the Virtual Academy in Rabun.
His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education from the University of North Georgia and a Specialist in Education Degree from Lincoln Memorial University.
He has been married for 23 years and is a father to three children: Jana Kate, Jasper, and Jaden. Jana Kate will join the leopard family as a Banks County High School freshman. Both Jasper and Jaden play collegiate sports. Jasper is part of Emmanuel University's basketball program, and Jaden plays football for the University of Virginia.
"I am extremely excited about becoming part of the Banks County basketball program. It has a long-standing tradition of excellence. I have missed coaching and am extremely excited about being part of such a strong program," Gibson stated.
The Lady Leopards have achieved remarkable success, including their first-ever state championship game appearance since 1965 during the 2022-2023 season, a 28-3 record in one season, three Elite 8 appearances, several region titles, and numerous state playoff runs.
In the 2023-2024 season, the Lady Leopards finished with an impressive 25-5 overall record and were undefeated in their region at 10-0. Their state ranking has seen them placed as high as 4th in the Georgia Division AA and 40th in the statewide rankings.
He shared his excitement about the summer season and his new team, which he plans on meeting this week.
"I am looking forward to summer basketball. It is a great opportunity to get to know the girls and get an idea of where we are and what we need to work on for the upcoming season. We will attend a GBCA (Georgia Basketball Coaches Association) live event, UNG team camp, and practicing and team-building activities."
The program will begin the summer season in June and host their first scrimmage game this November.
