Water Safety

In an effort to protect Georgia's youth, the state legislature has passed HB 402, officially named the Eda Mae McGovern Act. This vital piece of legislation is a direct response to the heartbreaking loss of young Eda Mae McGovern, who tragically drowned in a backyard pool.

What Does the Act Do?

The Eda Mae McGovern Act mandates that all Georgia public schools and local school systems:

  •       Annually provide water safety education information to students and their parents or guardians at the start of each school year.
  •       Offer information about accessible water safety education courses and swimming lessons within the community.
  •       By equipping students and families with essential water safety knowledge, this act aims to significantly reduce the risk of drowning incidents.
