BCHS golfers getting prepped for region tourney
By Justin Poole
Banks County Leopard boys golfers were granted a reprieve Monday when Madison canceled the scheduled match due to weather.
Coming up for the Leopard golfers is Franklin County next Monday. The March 23 match will be at the Highland Walk course. Banks will tee off at 3:30 p.m.
Banks County opened the season against Franklin County March 9 at the Leopards’ home course, Hammer’s Glen.
Last week the Leopard golfers played a round against East Jackson at Double Oaks in Commerce on Wednesday.
Also at Double Oaks on Wednesday was Oglethorpe. Banks’ boys triumphed winning both matches and defeating Oglethorpe by three strokes. Carson Bentley posted the Leopards’ low score.
Boys’ coach Kasey Hanley said that Banks’ golfers are shaking the rust off and getting into the groove.
“At this point, we are just playing the courses and ourselves,” said Hanley. “We have several golfers that are just trying to get the rust off. No one has had much time to play in the off-season, mainly due to competing in other sports.”
On Thursday, March 12, Banks traveled to Traditions to play Jackson County and Buford. According to Hanley, the course is what led to the Leopards dropping both matches. Bentley once again was the low scorer for the team.
“We are just taking each day as preparation for the region tourney,” Hanley said. “In golf, region is all that matters.”
Leopard golfers finish up at region
The Banks County golfers traveled to the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville Monday to compete in the 8-AA region tournament to end the season.
North Oconee took first place in the boy’s tournament and Rabun defeated Union for second. Jefferson took the top spot in the girls’ round with Rabun taking second.
For the Banks’ boys, Riley Nicholson was the low scorer followed by Will O’Kelley. Also starting were Ryan Griffin, Carson Bentley, Matt Wilhelm and Ben Hewell.
For the Lady Leopards, Lauren Kennedy led as the low scorer followed by Lindsey McDuffie. Also competing for the ladies were Katerina Manley and Jordan Miller.
