Michael Williams Named Principal at BCES

Michael Williams has been named as the principal of Banks County Elementary School. Williams, who is presently the assistant principal at BCHS, will take over the reins from the current principal, Jan Bertrang, beginning July 1. Williams has served as an administrator since 2005. Prior to becoming an administrator for the school system, he taught health, physical education, special education, and science at BCHS. He began his career in 1994 at BCMS teaching health and physical education. During his career, he has been the head varsity baseball coach, assistant football coach, and assistant basketball coach.

Williams is a graduate of Madison County High School. He completed his specialist degree in leadership in 2007 at Lincoln Memorial University. He holds a master’s degree from Clemson University and received his bachelor’s degree from Piedmont College. He and his wife, Christy, have three children.

Regarding his promotion, Mr. Williams said, “I am thrilled to have this opportunity. I have high expectations for myself and this school. I look forward to working with the faculty and staff, students, parents, and community in helping our children thrive.”

Superintendent Chris Erwin announced Williams as the new principal to the faculty of Banks County Elementary School on Thursday afternoon. In his introduction, Erwin commented, “Mr. Williams has integrity and judgment skills that lend to him being successful as a leader.”

Williams is replacing Jan Bertrang, who is retiring after 32 years as an educator and administrator in Banks County. However, Bertrang will continue her role in education as the director of the Head Start program in Banks County.

FBLA WRAPS UP WITH GREAT YEAR

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) has had a very successful year. Members have been excited about participating this year.

Many do not know that Georgia FBLA is the largest and most competitive in the nation. Georgia has over 25,000 student members and has won awards for its membership. With such high membership, the competition is stiff. Twenty-one Banks County High students competed in twelve different events in region competition at Madison County High School. Twelve students advanced to state competition at the Hyatt-Regency in downtown Atlanta. Of those advancing to state, two of those students placed top-ten in the state and received their award on stage during a recorded presentation at the Hyatt. We are very proud of their accomplishments.

FBLA also had its annual Biggest Loser competition. Twenty-five teachers participated losing around 300 pounds from January to the end of March. The annual FBLA Powder-Puff game was a big success in regards to attendance, participation, and fund-raising. The seniors and sophomores defeated the freshmen and juniors 32-0. Despite the score, fun was had by all participants and spectators. Thanks to everyone who came out to support FBLA and our Banks County High School students.
