Banks County School System Superintendent Stan Davis announced Melanie Hinton, music teacher at Banks County Elementary School, as the Banks County School System Teacher of the Year on Thursday night. Each of the four schools recognized an educator as Teacher of the Year. Patricia Chitwood, special education teacher, BCPS; Kathy Holcombe, language arts teacher, BCMS; and Cory Mahan, special education teacher, BCHS; completed the court of professionals. A committee of educators outside of the community interviewed the teachers and read their individual portfolios prior to making the selection of the system teacher of the year. Dr. Donna McMullan, Jefferson City Schools Associate Superintendent, served as an interviewer and commented on the difficulty of choosing a single winner among the group. “These educators are obviously all fantastic teachers who represent their profession well and care for students. Selecting only one winner was difficult,” said McMullan.
In addition to honoring the teachers, the system continued the tradition of recognizing Paraprofessionals of the Year and Classified Staff Members of the Year. Davis said of those being honored, “I am proud to recognize these individuals for their support and commitment. We appreciate them and the great job that they do and we want them to know that,” he noted. Those honored as Paraprofessionals of the Year include Sherri Blackburn, BCPS; Lindsey Ariail, BCES; Angie Shockley, BCMS; and Teresa Rogers, BCHS. Those named as Classified Staff Members of the Year include Len Carter, BCPS; Lisa Greenway, BCES; Michelle Brown, BCMS; and Kim Miller; BCHS. The Board of Education hosted a reception honoring all of the employees and their families on Thursday, November 6th at the BCES cafeteria prior to the regularly scheduled meeting of the Banks County Board of Education.
