Leopards Take a Leap with Armstrong
The Banks County Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Blair Armstrong as the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach last Thursday night. Armstrong replaces Al Pollard, who vacated the position to complete his doctoral degree in administration and supervision according to his resignation letter turned in earlier in the month. The Banks County Board of Education voted unanimously to hire.
Armstrong, the 2005-06 Gwinnett County Coach of the Year, leaves as most recent head football coach of the state co-champion AAAAA Peachtree Ridge High School team. Armstrong and his Jefferson County High School team in Monticello, Florida, Armstrong’s alma mater, were also state co-champions in 1982.
With a resume citing jaunts in such places as Johnson High School in Hall County and schools in Gwinnett County and Florida, Armstrong has had a successful history of taking struggling programs and creating winning teams. In addition to football, his sports repertoire includes basketball and track. When questioned about his decision to pursue the job in Banks County, Armstrong noted he wanted to “teach the kids to compete, have fun, and win” and indicated his desire to return to his roots of working in a small town atmosphere.
“Armstrong has 28 years of coaching and teaching experience that will suit him well for this job. We are excited about acquiring him to head the football program and athletic department for Banks County. I believe our students will be motivated by him,” said Art Wheaton, principal of Banks County Highs School, of the recent addition to the staff. In response to Superintendent Chris Erwin’s comment about Armstrong’s strength being in building quality sports programs, the newly appointed coach said, “I enjoy seeing the look in the player’s eyes when they have their first winning season in their career.”
