The Georgia Department of Education recently released the list of 2014 Reward Schools. The designation is reserved for schools with the highest performance or the biggest academic gains by students in the last three years. Banks County Elementary School has been named a High-Progress School and Banks County Middle School has been recognized as a Highest Performance School.
To be heralded as a highest performance school, a Title I school must be among the 5% of Title I schools in the State that has the highest absolute performance over three years for the “all students” group on the statewide assessments.
A school must be among the 10% of Title I schools in the State that is making the most progress in improving the performance of the “all students” group over three years on the statewide assessments to be named high-progress. A school may not be classified as a High-Progress School if there are significant achievement gaps across subgroups that are not closing in the school.
Principal of Banks County Middle School, Nancy Bentley, said, “The students, faculty and staff at the middle school have worked hard to achieve this honor, and I am very proud of their accomplishments. We have supportive parents, central office staff, and Board of Education members who have played a vital role in our success. It is truly a team effort,” commented Bentley.
Of the recent award, Michael Williams, principal of BCES said, “We are proud of this recognition. It is a tribute to our students, staff and parents. This recognition confirms that we are seeing success for all students,” said Williams.
The State’s new accountability system, implemented last February after the State received a waiver granted by the federal government from the federal No Child Left Behind Act, categorizes schools as priority, focus and reward schools depending on graduation rates and progress on state standardized assessments.
Interim Superintendent of Banks County Schools, Donna Reed, said, “I am extremely proud of the elementary school’s and the middle school’s most recent designation. The recognitions are well-deserved. The students, teachers, parents, and administrators are all working together to increase student learning at these schools,” Reed noted.
